12 Gauge Rifled Slug Accuracy Testing:
Today I was feeling a need to punish myself, so I shot 80 rounds of full power 1 ounce 12 gauge rifled slugs in an effort to find out which were the most accurate.
Shotgun:
I used a Mossberg 500 with a 18.5” cylinder bore barrel (no choke) and a budget 3 MOA Bushnell TRS-25 (pictured above).
Ammunition Tested:
I tested Remington’s “Slugger”, Winchester’s Walmart bulk pack (15 round per box), and Federal’s “Power-Shok” slugs. I wanted to see if I could get a decent enough groups to hunt hawgs at 100 yards.
Test Procedure and Results:
I got my shots on paper at 25 yards and then tested each brand at 50 and 100 yard. The Winchester was all over the place… some rounds not even hitting the target at 100 yards. The Remington Sluggers were a little better, but even with a red dot I could only hit the black part of the target half the time.
Federal’s Power-Shock Rocks:
Then I tried the Federal Power-Shok. Holy smokes. The target pictured below is four rounds of Power Skok at 50 yards.. two holes touching. As always, Federal ammo is da shit! I ran out of daylight (and shoulder). I’ll test it at 100 yards when my shoulder recovers and post photos of the results.
Do yourself a favor. If you are trying to feed slugs (flying ashtrays) to your shotgun, try the Federal Power-Shok, but expect a shortage for quite a while as I will be hoarding all I can get, and hopefully using them to convert hawg heads into canoes.
I have had great luck with Brenneke
