I have recently added Midwest Industries Extended Universal Handguards to two different AKs and I love them. Great fit and finish. No rattle what so ever. The set definitely makes it easier to add a light, vertical grip, optics (on top of the gas tube), etc. The rail system will count as two parts for your 922.r compliance.
As alway when shooting an AK, wear Mechanix or similar type of light work gloves. We all know how hot the steel around the small wood forend gets on the tradition furniture. The rail system will heat up somewhat too, but a vertical grip or quality rail panel covers and / or some gloves will take care of that.
Be sure to buy a set of ladder or panel type rail protectors. Buy some type of sling mount for the left side of the rail system as you will have to grind off the factory sling loop.
Mount your vertical grip forward enough so that it will not interfere with the insertion and removal of the mag. Pictured on the photos below is Blackhawk’s vertical grip available at Bass Pro Shops and Walmart. It mounts on solid, but isn’t the most comfortable or ergonomic up near the top of the grip where it is mounted to the rail. I have a Magpul stubby vertical grip on another gun and it is far superior.
Mounted on the AK below is a Streamlight Polytech 120 lumen LED light and GG&G light mount ring purchased from Botach Tactical. They work great. Be sure to use Loctite on the mounting screws so that they don’t vibrate out when you are run’n & gun’n.
Nice setup. I will be doing something like this soon.

HAve you noticed any change in accuracy? nutnfancy tested AK’s with and without that rail and with it he claimed a consistent 1 to 2 MOA decrease in accuracy. Took it off and retested and regained 1 to 2 MOA. Just wondering what your experience was.

I have two of the same rifles. One has the handguard. One does not. When zeroing both rifles I couldn’t tell any difference between the two. After zeroing the rifle with the handguard I was able to consistently make hits on 18×18″ steel plates at 300 yards. I was also able to hit a 24×24″ plate at 500 yards after 4 or 5 attempts. If it throws off accuracy then I can tell it. I will investigate it more carefully though.
