First Line Gear: Everyday Carry:

1st Line Gear or Everyday Carry (EDC): This is what you carry on you everyday. EDC refers to small items or gadgets worn, carried, or made available in pockets, holsters, or bags on a daily basis to manage common tasks or for use in unexpected situations or emergencies. The list of items may include your wallet with cash, cell phone, watch, quality blade, small flashlight, concealed handgun and one reload. In a broader sense, EDC is a lifestyle, discipline, or philosophy of preparedness.

If you are ever in a situation where you might have to bug-out, consider adding quality walking shoes, quality leather or “rigger’s” belt, handgun in quality belt holster, plus a minimum of two reloads for your handgun to your everyday carry wear. You may also choose to carry a bigger flashlight, and possibly more cash (small bills).

If you are in an all-out SHTF situation, carry all of the above, and consider adding a pocket survival kit and a first-aid kit in cargo pants pockets.

Do not wear tactical clothing (military clothing, 5-11 pants, etc). Nothings say “cop” or “armed wanna-be” like wearing that stuff. Your personal line gear should be worn concealed so as not to attract unwanted attention from sheep and well-meaning law enforcement that may misinterpret your intentions, and wolves intent on taking your gear. When not carrying a long gun you should be able to blend into the general populace without drawing attention to yourself. Be the sheepdog, but dress as the sheep. There is an old saying: “The dumber people think you are, the more surprised they will be when you kill them.” Surprise the wolf.

EDC Checklist:

Carried on your body and the minimum to fight with:

  • pistol
  • ammunition (amount is mission dependent)
  • small knife or multi-tool
  • flashlight
  • mobile phone

Depending on the threat level and environment, add:

  • medical gear (tourniquet, hemostatic and/or compression bandage)
  • compass and/or GPS
  • cash (large amount of small bills)
  • passport and credentials
  • escape and evasion kit
  • backup battery for cell phone and flashlights

    • I don’t know you could in jeans. I’d probably carry stuff in a jacket pocket or day pack. Jeans aren’t really the best option because they are made of cotton and that doesn’t wick away moisture, and cotton does not dry very quickly. There are lots of synthetic cargo pants that don’t make you look like tactical such as with 5.11. Whenever I see a bad haircut and 5.11 clothing, I automatically assume that it is a new rookie fresh out of the police academy that had a cop shop across the street.

      • Thx 4 info! 😊 However I live in Belgium and daypack is not always a good ideaal (terrorist attacks). In present Day guys like me with a backpack or slingbag are always subject to checks by LEO’s. This is not the kind of attention I want. I Will keep looking for alternatives. If you should find one I would be happy to hear about it.

        • I like that you don’t want to draw attention to yourself. Be the “grey man” as we say in the United States. Don’t draw attention to yourself, either from the bad guys or law enforcement. A backpack will draw attention from the police and military, and tactical clothing may draw unwanted attention from the bad guys (if they think that you are a plain clothes police officer then you will be the first one to be targeted in a shooting spree). I am not against cargo pants, but to remain grey I would avoid tactical pants. Go with something more casual or camping style that won’t attract attention. If you wear a suit or a jacket and tie to work, then you will have pockets in your suit jacket. Also, if you are professionally dressed, then you shouldn’t attract to much attention if your are carrying an attache case with your gear concealed inside. I am curious… what are your laws concerning the carrying of personal defense spray (Mace, pepper spray, etc.) and pocket knives?

          • The law concearning personal protection is very simplex. … ILLEGAL! Mace and pepperspray = illegal. Concealed carry= only your job requiers it. Owning aan gun= after taking test + something called (here in belgium) proof of good citizenship ( I do not know translation) . Pocketknives is somewhat aan Grey area. You see attention is something you do not want.
            What kind of protection do I have? I practice KravMaga, taking tests to own a gun and edc is kershaw pocketknife andere a led flashLight with dna-extracter. IFAK I have not figured out yet…but I am getting there.😊
